İlker Ortaç / Work
Photograph 11
Moving hair cuts across warm color; the photograph does not hold the face as a fixed identification image.

From life to creative practice
Ortaç’s portfolio moves between drawing, writing and photography. His artist statement’s interest in traces, character and distance from flawless appearance offers a framework for viewing photographs too, without making claims about the sitters’ identities or the conditions of a shoot.
From making to presentation
- Frame: the reading follows visible light, face and body placement.
- Archive: the photograph retains its portfolio number without assigning a shoot date, location or equipment.
- Presentation: the button opens this photograph’s archived image file.
From the studio: a creative reconstruction
A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.
When imagining the frame, I think of the excluded space as part of the image too. Instead of fully explaining a face, I look only as far as the light allows. Shadow can resemble missing information; I want that absence to remain in the picture.
Working around Photograph 11, my attention returns to this detail: Moving hair cuts across warm color; the photograph does not hold the face as a fixed identification image. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.
In the final passage, I imagine returning the work to its own context. I leave room for reading a page, looking at a frame or watching the film beyond the narrative assembled here.
