From life to creative practice
Ilker Ortaç describes himself as a Marxist-Leninist writer, illustrator and visual artist. Identity and representation recur across his work. Reading a political figure’s portrait in this context does not attribute all of that figure’s positions to the artist.

I begin by imagining which comfort an image or sentence might disturb. I am not looking for a neat conclusion that explains everything. Shifting one detail a little can reveal how easily an accepted order was put together.
Working around Şiddetin Ortasında Onur Yürüyüşlerinde Bizi Bir Araya Getiren Şey, my attention returns to this detail: Şiddetin Ortasında Onur Yürüyüşlerinde Bizi Bir Araya Getiren Şey is one of the published texts in İlker Ortaç’s Work selection. The full text is read on the original publisher’s page. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.
In the final passage, I imagine returning the work to its own context. I leave room for reading a page, looking at a frame or watching the film beyond the narrative assembled here.
