From the studio: a creative reconstruction
A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.
Before sitting down with a face, I often imagine a rhythm moving through it. I want the line to stumble occasionally, like an uneven drumbeat. When I make the face too tidy, it feels as if I have erased the unease that held it here.
Working around Biggie: Crown Portrait in Blue and Gold, my attention returns to this detail: A gold crown rises above Biggie’s face. Uneven marks keep the face from becoming a clean logo. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.
I imagine returning to the surface and looking at how the marks cross. Rather than cleaning every trace away, I want to retain the distance the work opened while taking shape.
How the drawing works on this product
The source artwork places the portrait on a physical surface. Its drawing marks belong to that object; buying a reproduction is a different choice, even when the image or dimensions resemble it. View the listing photographs to judge the surface and condition before deciding.
