Red Hot Chili Peppers Band Portrait: ceramic mug

From the studio: a creative reconstruction

A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.

Before sitting down with a face, I often imagine a rhythm moving through it. I want the line to stumble occasionally, like an uneven drumbeat. When I make the face too tidy, it feels as if I have erased the unease that held it here.

Working around Red Hot Chili Peppers Band Portrait, my attention returns to this detail: Four figures stand together rather than appearing as separate badges. Clothing and posture preserve their differences. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.

I imagine a mug turning in someone’s hand. One side of the image disappearing as another emerges adds a small sense of time to the portrait; I consider its placement through that turn.
