From the studio: a creative reconstruction
A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.
Before sitting down with a face, I often imagine a rhythm moving through it. I want the line to stumble occasionally, like an uneven drumbeat. When I make the face too tidy, it feels as if I have erased the unease that held it here.
Working around Nick Cave Blue Portrait, my attention returns to this detail: A dark suit and blue field frame Nick Cave’s face. Narrow eyes and an angular brow give the frontal gaze its severity. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.
I imagine the face on a soft surface. Considering how its expression changes as it bends toward the edges takes the portrait beyond a flat sheet.
How the drawing works on this product
A square pillow cover brings the portrait into a softer setting. Corners and seams can change the visible framing when the cover is filled. Compare the facial placement in the mockup, and remember that a cover is different from a complete cushion with an insert.
