From the studio: a creative reconstruction
A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.
Before sitting down with a face, I often imagine a rhythm moving through it. I want the line to stumble occasionally, like an uneven drumbeat. When I make the face too tidy, it feels as if I have erased the unease that held it here.
Working around Tom Waits Colorful Portrait, my attention returns to this detail: Waits’s face breaks into bright blue, orange and green shapes. The hat stays recognizable within that fragmented color. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.
I imagine unwritten sentences beside the cover. Placing the drawing on a notebook suggests that the image will become a neighbour to someone else’s notes.
How the drawing works on this product
The notebook places the portrait next to a writing surface. The spiral forms an extra edge beside the cover image, while dotted pages offer a different interior from ruled or blank paper. The cover illustration and the page layout are separate reasons to choose this format.
