A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.
Before sitting down with a face, I often imagine a rhythm moving through it. I want the line to stumble occasionally, like an uneven drumbeat. When I make the face too tidy, it feels as if I have erased the unease that held it here.
Working around Marilyn Manson: Red Portrait, my attention returns to this detail: Dark eyes and mouth sit inside Manson’s ochre face. Heavy marks distinguish this red-sided treatment from the expressive portrait. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.
I imagine the image being carried along a street. Handles, folds and bodily movement bring new boundaries beside the drawing, and I leave room for the face to meet them.
