From life to creative practice
Ilker Ortaç describes himself as a Marxist-Leninist writer, illustrator and visual artist. Identity and representation recur across his work. Reading a political figure’s portrait in this context does not attribute all of that figure’s positions to the artist.

From the studio: a creative reconstruction
A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.
I begin by imagining which comfort an image or sentence might disturb. I am not looking for a neat conclusion that explains everything. Shifting one detail a little can reveal how easily an accepted order was put together.
Working around Bernie Sanders: Red Print, my attention returns to this detail: A pale line-built Sanders face sits on bright red. This print differs from both blue-named digital portraits. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.
I imagine the distance from which the print will be seen on a wall. Watching lines scatter up close and reunite from farther away, I look for room for the image to breathe inside its frame.
How the drawing works on this product
A paper reproduction gives the image a fixed physical scale without being the original drawing. The paper size and the size of the printed image are not necessarily identical. Check the Etsy listing for margins, paper details and frame inclusion before arranging a place on the wall.
