MF DOOM’s mask becomes an angular blue face. Mask edges remain as strong as the features they replace.
Traces of drawing, encounters between colors and individual character are central to İlker Ortaç’s portraits and figures. The image can be approached through the way a face or body is constructed, as well as through whom it represents.
İlker Ortaç’s relationship with music extends beyond listening: his biography also describes playing drums. His connection with punk and underground culture offers a context for reading this portrait within a practice that moves between sounds and faces.
A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.
Before sitting down with a face, I often imagine a rhythm moving through it. I want the line to stumble occasionally, like an uneven drumbeat. When I make the face too tidy, it feels as if I have erased the unease that held it here.
Working around MF DOOM, my attention returns to this detail: MF DOOM’s mask becomes an angular blue face. Mask edges remain as strong as the features they replace. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.
I want to consider the work from a distance for a while, then return to the same small detail. Imagining its different formats side by side, I try to keep the trace that stopped me in the first place.
