Looking at the image

Kieslowski’s face sits beneath a dark fringe. Pink and pale green divide the surface around steady eyes.

Traces of drawing, encounters between colors and individual character are central to İlker Ortaç’s portraits and figures. The image can be approached through the way a face or body is constructed, as well as through whom it represents.

From life to creative practice

İlker Ortaç’s involvement with cinema extends beyond drawing faces: he made short films and acted. During sociology graduate study at Mimar Sinan, he presented a thesis on disability in Turkish cinema and left after the jury meeting. That history provides a field of inquiry alongside the portrait.

Creative approach

From the studio: a creative reconstruction

A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.

I approach this face as a single frame drawn out of a longer scene. I imagine what might happen just before and after it, then pull those explanations back. I want the gaze left in the frame to carry tension without giving away the whole story.

Working around Krzysztof Kieslowski, my attention returns to this detail: Kieslowski’s face sits beneath a dark fringe. Pink and pale green divide the surface around steady eyes. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.

I want to consider the work from a distance for a while, then return to the same small detail. Imagining its different formats side by side, I try to keep the trace that stopped me in the first place.
