Looking at the image

Green hair and a pink bubble of gum organize this small figure. The muted field leaves room around those saturated details.

Traces of drawing, encounters between colors and individual character are central to İlker Ortaç’s portraits and figures. The image can be approached through the way a face or body is constructed, as well as through whom it represents.

From life to creative practice

İlker Ortaç does not reduce his experience of disability to a story inviting pity or applause. How bodies are seen, who is excluded and who defines normality are central questions in his artist statement.

Creative approach

From the studio: a creative reconstruction

A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.

I imagine removing the invisible ruler that tells a body where it should begin and end. A shoulder, a beard and an item of clothing should not have to agree. I enlarge their encounter, then leave it somewhere the gaze cannot immediately escape.

Working around Green Haired Bubblegum Woman, my attention returns to this detail: Green hair and a pink bubble of gum organize this small figure. The muted field leaves room around those saturated details. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.

I want to consider the work from a distance for a while, then return to the same small detail. Imagining its different formats side by side, I try to keep the trace that stopped me in the first place.
