Looking at the image

Blue and green marks divide the face beneath long hair. Pink surrounding lines continue outside the head rather than forming a clean border.

Traces of drawing, encounters between colors and individual character are central to İlker Ortaç’s portraits and figures. The image can be approached through the way a face or body is constructed, as well as through whom it represents.

From life to creative practice

İlker Ortaç’s involvement with cinema extends beyond drawing faces: he made short films and acted. During sociology graduate study at Mimar Sinan, he presented a thesis on disability in Turkish cinema and left after the jury meeting. That history provides a field of inquiry alongside the portrait.

Creative approach

From the studio: a creative reconstruction

A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.

I approach this face as a single frame drawn out of a longer scene. I imagine what might happen just before and after it, then pull those explanations back. I want the gaze left in the frame to carry tension without giving away the whole story.

Working around Fatih Akın, my attention returns to this detail: Facial lines and the gaze’s position within the frame come forward. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.

I want to consider the work from a distance for a while, then return to the same small detail. Imagining its different formats side by side, I try to keep the trace that stopped me in the first place.
