Looking at the image

Bono’s tilted head sits in pale purple. Glasses and warm facial color create a diagonal focus.

Traces of drawing, encounters between colors and individual character are central to İlker Ortaç’s portraits and figures. The image can be approached through the way a face or body is constructed, as well as through whom it represents.

From life to creative practice

İlker Ortaç’s relationship with music extends beyond listening: his biography also describes playing drums. His connection with punk and underground culture offers a context for reading this portrait within a practice that moves between sounds and faces.

Creative approach

From the studio: a creative reconstruction

A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.

Before sitting down with a face, I often imagine a rhythm moving through it. I want the line to stumble occasionally, like an uneven drumbeat. When I make the face too tidy, it feels as if I have erased the unease that held it here.

Working around Bono, my attention returns to this detail: Bono’s tilted head sits in pale purple. Glasses and warm facial color create a diagonal focus. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.

I want to consider the work from a distance for a while, then return to the same small detail. Imagining its different formats side by side, I try to keep the trace that stopped me in the first place.
