Looking at the image

Loose blue lines trace Sanders’s glasses. Broad pale spaces distinguish this drawing from the red print.

Traces of drawing, encounters between colors and individual character are central to İlker Ortaç’s portraits and figures. The image can be approached through the way a face or body is constructed, as well as through whom it represents.

From life to creative practice

Ilker Ortaç describes himself as a Marxist-Leninist writer, illustrator and visual artist. Identity and representation recur across his work. Reading a political figure’s portrait in this context does not attribute all of that figure’s positions to the artist.

Creative approach

From the studio: a creative reconstruction

A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.

I begin by imagining which comfort an image or sentence might disturb. I am not looking for a neat conclusion that explains everything. Shifting one detail a little can reveal how easily an accepted order was put together.

Working around Bernie Sanders Line Portrait, my attention returns to this detail: Loose blue lines trace Sanders’s glasses. Broad pale spaces distinguish this drawing from the red print. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.

I want to consider the work from a distance for a while, then return to the same small detail. Imagining its different formats side by side, I try to keep the trace that stopped me in the first place.
