Looking at the image

A restless outline encloses Joshua’s face. Orange and short hair marks make this rougher than the red portrait.

Traces of drawing, encounters between colors and individual character are central to İlker Ortaç’s portraits and figures. The image can be approached through the way a face or body is constructed, as well as through whom it represents.

From life to creative practice

Beşiktaş and Efes Pilsen terraces also appear in Ortaç’s biography. This personal proximity to sporting culture offers a way to read the portrait apart from a score or match record. The face is not presented as documentation of a specific game.

Creative approach

From the studio: a creative reconstruction

A first-person creative reconstruction drawing on the biography and artworks.

I imagine how the sound of a terrace might become a line across a face. Describing movement does not require filling an entire court or pitch; sometimes a jaw, a gaze or a compressed shoulder is enough. I let the line move around that tension.

Working around Anthony Joshua Sketch Portrait, my attention returns to this detail: A restless outline encloses Joshua’s face. Orange and short hair marks make this rougher than the red portrait. In the next passage, I imagine pulling back anything that weakens that encounter and leaving the areas holding its tension open for longer.

I want to consider the work from a distance for a while, then return to the same small detail. Imagining its different formats side by side, I try to keep the trace that stopped me in the first place.
